African Goose
The African goose is a remarkably massive bird which has a heavy body and a thick neck. Despite its name, the African goose is a relative of the Chinese goose; both of them have descended from the wild swan goose which is native from Asia. In its history, the African goose got a lot of names and its origin has been attributed to several continents. They arrived to North America on ships that were travelling around the world so the exact origin is unknown at the moment. In comparison with other species, they apparently cope with high temperatures and they are ideal for warm and hot climates.
It will take several years for the African goose’s large knob ( attached to its forehead ) to develop. A smooth dewlap hangs from its upper neck and lower jaw. As years pass by, the dewlap can become ragged in shape. The African goose’s body is almost as long as it is wide. The goose has a rounded smooth abdomen with little or even no fatty lobe developments. It has large and deep set eyes. The mature male has a weight of around 22 pounds while a woman has about 18 pounds.
In North America there are two varieties: colored variety ( also known as the Gray or Brown ) and white variety. The colored variety has a plumage which consists in a combination of buffs, grays, browns and white. Legs and feet are orange ( dark to brown ). On the mature geese there is a narrow band of whitish feathers which separates the satin black bill and the knob from the brown head. The white African goose has a white plumage while the knob is orange, just like the knob.
As far as breeding is concerned, the eggs are quite large ( between 5 and 8 ounces ) and hatch for about 31 days, give or take 1-2 days. In America, these geese are very productive as they provide 20 up to 40 eggs in a single season. The African goose produces top quality lean meat. The young ganders have a weight which ranges between 16 and 18 pounds when they are 15-18 weeks old. They can easily resist in difficult environments such as low temperatures but they need a warmer shelter in order to protect their knobs from frostbites.
The African goose has a rather unique call similar with the Chinese goose but only a little deeper. These geese are pretty agile and active for a large animal. In Australia and the United States they were crossed with the Chinese goose in order to get more eggs. They were also crossed with the Toulouse so that their size would be increased
